Why I Went Vegan

This is new to me, since I only made the change to vegan at the beginning of the month. For the longest time I have been struggling with the act of eating animal produce when I am such a huge animal lover. On one hand I am a true believer in the natural food chain, science. On the other hand we as humans have come along far enough now to know how to survive without hurting animals unnecessarily. When science is used to degrade quality, pump our foods full of chemicals, hormones, and unwanted nasties. I’m not going to drone on about all the bad stuff that happens to animals behind closed doors; we’ve all seen it, it makes us all angry, and if it doesn’t upset you at least a little then you’re not human!

So I’m just going to simply list a few of my reasons for swapping to a vegan lifestyle, bearing in mind that for me it is a huge step to take after being a meat and two veg eater for 35 years.

For the Animals
Aside from my fear of flapping wings and creepy crawlies scuttling across my face in the middle of the night, I am the hugest animal lover. During the school holidays we would take care of the animals on my sons school farm, even then I could never eat the eggs we were offered because I knew the chickens they came from. Running around with the rabbits, ducks, chickens; it’s like being at one with nature. It helps make you whole. My father was a farmer half of his life, the other half he continued his worked at multiple cattle markets.  I used to help him during the holidays; rounding up the cows and sheep; we’d always visit one of his farm pals on the way home. Oh yeah, I talk to animals in the street as if they can understand me, to which I get weird looks but I don’t care! I always feed the squirrels and the ducks. I hate spiders and moths (check above statement!) but I won’t kill them if they get in the house, I always make the hubby collect them and release them outside.

For the Health Benefits
My body has been all over the place for years, especially my hormone levels. When you think about animal products, the majority have all been injected with hormones, and we put that into our bodies! No wonder mine went wonky for so long! I have always been a huge beef, cheese and ice-cream eater so there lies that problem. Now, I make my own ice-cream as and when I need to.
I have been overweight for the majority of my life and my goal is to use this change as a way to take more control of my size. Many diets have been tried before and it always comes back to the same thing; eat well, eat balanced, don’t skip, don’t meal replace, be active, drink water, boom! As we’re on the subject, my highest weight ever was 310lbs on a 5ft 2 frame, never again!

For the Nutritional Boost
I have always been a huge fruit eater, for over 25 years I would only eat a handful of different veggies (potatoes, carrots, onion, peas, tomatoes), and never salad. It’s the texture of raw produce and the feeling of chowing down on some grass had always put me off, made me feel nauseated. My goal is to tick one new food off my list every few days, including the ones I know I didn’t like before! We all know that our taste buds change with our diet. Two years ago I was taking powdered vegetable capsules and I found that I was starting to crave broccoli and sprouts. Because it was in the powder capsules my body got used to it and wanted more. At the same time I also introduced courgette, peppers and spinach. So by removing animal produce from my diet I am forcing myself to eat a wider range of plant based produce, one step at a time. Not to mention the fact that most are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals; that’s a bonus for our bodies; including hair, skin and nails.

My Challenges
Meeting my daily protein target (currently at 140g) without animal produce is harder than I thought it would be. I used My Fitness Pal to track my intake and I have always been a huge believer of the high protein low carb when it comes to macros.
More protein, builds muscle, burns fat, calories burn faster.
Less protein, burns muscle, leaves fat behind, calories burn slower.
Depending on my day I reach between 60-85g, aside from eating soy products daily, I struggle to hit it.
This week I burned out 6lb of muscle mass and gained 2% body fat which is bad!

Sabbats ~ Litha (Wheel of the Year)

Merry Meet,

This is an addition to the Sabbat/Wheel of the year series which I started back in 2014.  I've have been working towards my Summer Solstice entry for my B.o.S and it's been a welcome break, to be amongst the books once more!  This is the fourth post of the Sabbat series:
Click for Beltane

Litha
Celebrating the Sabbats
21st June (Northern)
21st December (Southern)
(Sun is 1o Cancer)

Litha, the Summer Solstice, is the longest day and the shortest night of the year, from this point forward the days will decrease in light and the night increase in darkness.  It is also Yule’s counterpart, which has been dated back at least 10,000 years and has been known by many names.
Like Beltane, Litha is very much a time for marriages and coming of age rites, including family celebrations.  Also a time to reflect on and nurture those goals created at the beginning of the Wheel cycle, to bring them into fruition for the better good.
Litha is a celebration of Fire & Water; with the sun representing the survival of all life around us and the water nourishing that life, including that of nature and crops.  Mother Earth and Father Sun are busy making everything green, lush and beautiful.  That being said, in Scandinavian tradition, Litha is the festival of Baldur, God of light.
In some traditions it is believed that the God has reached his peak during this festival, and afterward he starts his descent once the sun has set.  Some would think of it as the God dying slowly. It is then that the Goddess takes her rightful place to reign and she will do so until Yule. She is also with child, She is fertility and abundance. Her husband, the God, slowly decaying, yet her baby will be nourished and soon become the God.
Dating back 2,000 years, it became tradition to set a wheel alight and roll in down a hill; the falling wheel aflame symbolising the decent of the Sun.  A similar tradition was to decorate a wheel with flowers and ribbons, attach lit candles then let it float away along a river or lake.  Another tradition is to light a hilltop bonfire for the villagers to see from afar.
In Greece and Rome, the people would hold mock funerals to mark the Suns descent.

Magical Workings:

Write your troubles, problems, sorrows or illness, pour seasonal herbs onto petition, and then tie with red ribbon, burn with red candle, chant to banish.

In the sand at the beach draw an image of the Sun, collect 3 stones or pieces of wood to symbolise 3 things you wish to change in your life. Watch the tide rid the old and bring in the new.  Alternatively, select some flower petals in oranges and reds and do the same on a hill top and watch the wind take away the old  and cleanse for the new.

The observe solstice sunrise with an orange juice toast, say something like:
“Mighty Sun King, round and bright
I welcome You into my life
I honour You upon this day
As You warm us all with golden ray”

Make God’s Eye hangings for use in protection magic.

Mirrors to capture the Sun energy

Tie yellow, orange or red ribbons to a tree to ask for strength in succeeding your goals.

Craft Ideas & Activities

Wreaths made for door out of feathers, red for sexuality and yellow or prosperity. String made from money tree harvesting for wealth tide with green ribbon.

Drum down the sunset for the shortest night.

Host a barbecue, picnic or party for friends & family, maybe with yellow or gold theme, and hold the Lord battle for entertainment.

Go for a walk in nature and take note of all the changes that have taken place since last sabbat: trees, wild flowers, birds, wildlife.

Decorate a wheel/wreath/wooden hoop with yellow, red and orange flowers and ribbons, attach candles then light them and let it float away along a river or lake.

Host a hilltop bonfire for the people to see from afar to come gather and join the celebration.

Go Morris/sword dancing with some friends.

In China, they host Origami boat races. Why not make and decorate your own and either race them or write something you want to rid yourself of and let it float away.

Crafty Witch ~ Gratitude Jar

Merry Meet,

Add some bling, I used sticky felt hearts & butterflies

So, I've been working on self-love and learning to show gratitude more. Also, my son is working on understanding how to show gratitude for what he has in his life.  This is a family target of ours this year, and making a cool jar to put all out notes of gratitude in seemed like the perfect project!  Here are some photo steps of what I did.

Video: Witchy Room: Early Spring Clean & Re-arranging Altars

It's the time for the pre-Spring cleaning and I start with my witchy room.  The room in general is very small so gets cluttered quite quickly. My aim here is to use smaller workspaces and throw out/recycle what I'm not needing in my sacred space. I use my witchy room as a supplies room for my aromatherapy business as well so that can take up quite a bit of space, especially on the occasions when I have stock pre-made in crates.
