St. Genevieve's Day
Today, January 3rd, is traditionally dedicated to St. Genevieve, patroness of the city of Paris.
At the age of seven, Genevieve was chosen from a crowd to have her future told by St. Germain of Auxerre, whose work was that of austerity, prayer and charity.
Even now, the Native American tribes of the Pueblo perform an annual ceremony, know as the Deer Dance, where the Shaman - wearing a deer headdress - invokes the Goddess Deer Mother to grant the tribe prosperity for the coming year.
In Elizabethan England, today was to observe the weather, for if the weather was mild then it was believed that they would pay for it later on in the year.
This is clearly stated in the Charles Kightly rhyme:
A kindly good Janiveer,
Freezeth the pot by the fire,
If in January, the Sun much appear,
March ans Aprile pay full dear.
