February 9th - 10th is the Festival of Yemanjá (meaning "the mother whose children are the fish"), the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the sea waters. Yemanjá is a Mother Goddess and has sphere of influence over large bodies of water, including the depths of the oceans, the patron Goddess of motherhood with associations to the Moon. Her colours are white and blue and her symbol associations include the fan, mermaids, the silver crescent and all that comes from the sea.
Celebrations begin in the morning by carrying candles, offerings carved with fish symbols and singing and dancing near the ocean.
Set tea light candles inside paper boats and let them float away as you make a wish for the year to come.
