Skimming the pages of Celebrating Wiccan Spirituality by Lady Sabrina, it has reminded me to add to my Feast of Lupercalia B.o.S. entry. If you'd like to read my first post on St Valentine click here.
The Feast of Lupercalia starts on February 15th and honours deities Juno and Pan. As stated in my previous Valentine post, celebrations include unwed women putting their names in a box and the single men drawing them in lottery formation. The link from Feast of Lupercalia to St Valentine's Day is that bishop Valentine (Rome 1570's AD) conducted secret weddings for Roman soldiers against orders of Claudius II (Claudius the Cruel) forbidding marriage. When Valentine was condemned to death, he connected with the judge's daughter and cured her of blindness whilst imprisoned. Upon execution he left her a letter signed "From your Valentine".
Magical Activity
A Love Box
Items required:
- Pink heart-shaped box
- Love-drawing oil
- Pink votive candle
- Square piece of parchment paper
- Lock of your hair
- Red ribbon
- Piece of rose quartz
Draw a heart in the middle of the parchment paper. Inside the heart, write your own name and then name of the person you desire or love.
Wrap the parchment around the lock of hair and keep it in place by tying the red ribbon around it.
Put the parchment inside the heart-shaped box, along with the rose quartz and close the lid.
Inscribe your name and the name of the person you love or desire into the pink candle.
Anoint the candle with the love oil and chant:
"May the God of love hear my plea
And bring everlasting love to me"
Put the candle on top of the heart box and light it.
Scry on the flame to visualise the one you love returning your love.
Chant the following 7 times:
"Hail to thee, great God of love
Shine down on me from far above
Bring the one I desire to me
That we shall ever love. So mote it be"
Before the candle burns out completed, drip some of the wax across the seal of the box to keep it shut.
On Valentine's day, gift the box to the one you love as a token of your love and friendship.
