Plough Monday

Merry Meet,

Every wondered what happened today in the history of paganism?  This is from the book: Celebrating Wiccan Spirituality by Lady Sabrina.

Plough Monday

The Monday following the Twelfth Day of Christmas was considered to be the start of the agricultural year in rural Europe.  To honour this, people would decorate a plough and take it through the village and around the fields whilst it's bearers begged for money.  Those who refused to take part were at risk of having his or garden ploughed.

The collected funds was spent on a large candle, which was then placed on the village church altar and then blessed to ensure good weather for the coming year.

New Year Success Spell

Items needed:
  • A yellow candle
  • Green ribbon
  • Small piece of parchment paper.
  1. Inscribe your name near the top of the candle and tie the green ribbon around the base.
  2. Write down your wish for the year ahead on the parchment.
  3. Place the candle in a holder and put the paper underneath it.
  4. Light the candle and chant:
Busy as can be
bright as a light
The success I see

Is mine from this night

Let the candle burn for one hour and then extinguish.  Repeat this spell for seven days, and on the seventh day allow the candle to burn out.

Fold the parchment into a small square and tie the green ribbon around it.  Carry this with you whilst your wish comes to light.
