Sticking with the tradition, I'm posting from the book Celebrating Wiccan Spirituality. Although with this entry I need to stress that I, and all Wiccan's, do not believe in live sacrifice.
Festival of Jana & Janus
Today, in history, in Ancient Rome, they honoured Jana (luminous sky), and her husband Janus (guardian of the passageways). A ram was sacrificed Janus at the festival for his protection. They invoked Jana to shine her light on the coming year.
The Romans believed that the spirit of Janus hovered over doorways, passageways and gates, and that this time was of huge consequence.
