Feast of Lupercalia

Merry Meet,

I have been working on my B.o.S entry for the Feast of Lupercalia, and as Valentine's Day is on the rise I thought I would share that particular page from the entry.  It's not in depth, just an overview, but that's all we need...right!? lol:

Feast of Lupercalia

Festival of Love

St Valentine
Around the year 278 AD, a holy priest, named Valentine, was beheaded by order of the Emperor, Claudius II.  “Claudius the Cruel” led a strong army but found that their attachments to their wives and families made them unwilling to follow his bloody and unpopular campaigns.  Claudius decided to ban all marriages and engagements in Rome in an attempt to fix his problem.

Valentine did not agree with this at all, so secretly performed marriages for young lovers.  When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and beheaded.  While in jail, Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine. His sentence was carried out on February 14th.  Valentine was named a saint after his death.
Although all legends differ, Valentine’s death has been linked to the February Pagan love festival, “the Feast of Lupercalia”.  Celebrations includes the names of the young women being placed in a box, and the names being drawn by the men.  In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius decided to put an end to the Feast of Lupercalia by declaring that February 14th be celebrated as St Valentine's Day.
