Artemis
Moon, Wild
Animals & Childbirth
Overview
Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, Wild
Animals, and the Moon, was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of
Apollo. She was also the Goddess of
Childbirth, the Protection of Children, Balance, Healing, Bringer of Disease,
Chastity and Protector of the Earth and Environment. Diana is her Roman counterpart.
Actaeon
Artemis and her nymphs were
bathing naked in a woodland pool one day, when Actaeon stumbled upon their
beauty and paused to watch. Artemis was
outraged and turned Actaeon into a stag and set his pack of hounds to kill him
and his dog.
Star Constellations
Orion, a hunter giant, had attempted
to rape Artemis, so she conjured a scorpion to kill both him and his dog. Orion became a constellation and his dog
transformed into the dog star known as Sirius.
Zeus had approached Callisto (a
nymph) disguised as Artemis and he seduced her.
Artemis then turned Callisto into a bear and then shot her. She too became the constellation known as the
Great Bear (the Plough).
